Have you heard about the grandparent grant?

In case you missed it, there are rumbling afoot about a new grant the Independent Alliance is demanding be paid to grandparents that play an active role in helping rear their grandchildren.

Some media have taken calling it a ‘Granny Grant’ but we know it takes a lot raise kids, including grandfathers too!

And so, the proposal calls for grandparents who help with childcare to receive a €1,000 annual payment. These proposals may go absolutely nowhere but because it has been aired in public, we thought it would be worth giving it a little web-time.

The plans would involve self-assessment and would be open to ALL grandparents who care for their grandchildren for 10 hours or more each week.

So far, it’s at the ‘flag-waving’ stage as Independent Alliance members are “calling” for the grant to be introduced. They are in negotiations with Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe ahead of the Budget.

As with most grants, applications would likely be through the Department of Social Protection. Critically though, and remember, this is all just talk, NO vouched expenses would be required!!!

Transport Minister Shane Ross is reported to want the grant to be made available to give "serious recognition" of the important role grandparents play in the care and upbringing of grandchildren.

Of concern is the fact that Mr Ross has been rebuffed by Fine Gael in all previous attempts to launch the grandparent grant but with a booming economy and a little more money in the State coffers, this campaign may finally deliver.

Apparently, the Independent Alliance have specifically named the grandparent grant as a key demand for October's Budget. It is estimated the grant scheme would cost in the region of €71m per year with 70,000 grandparents becoming eligible for the grant.
