Airport Central pivotal to Government €10m EMA plans

The European Medicines Agency, which is currently located in London’s Canary Wharf is looking for a new home.

It protects public and animal health in 28 EU Member States, as well as the countries of the European Economic Area, by ensuring that all medicines available on the EU market are safe, effective and of high quality.

Due to the 2016 UK Brexit vote, the EMA will be vacating its London location along with its 890 staff that work there.

Currently, EU member states are competing to attract the EMA to relocate.

Ireland is actively competing to attract the EMA staff to Dublin, including to Airport Central.

The Irish application was officially submitted this week.

The Government has offered to spend €10 million to help with the relocation of staff at the European Medicines Agency from London to Dublin.

The Irish application to host the EMA when Britain leaves the European Union also contains a commitment to contribute €78m towards the agency's rent and maintenance in Ireland.

If the application to host the EMA to north County Dublin is successful, it would serve as a significant boost to the international profile of Airport Central and the wider North Dublin area. “We welcome the Government application and hope that it is a success” said. Ms. Edel Bourke, CEO of St. Joseph’s Irish Airports & Aviation Credit Union.

“We have been serving all employees working within Dublin Airport for over 50 years. Airport Central is a major initiative that promises to boost the services and profile of the airport and it is great that it forms a pillar of the Government EMA campaign” said Ms. Bourke.

The Government has committed to spending €15m in the first year to fit-out the selected premises, and an annual contribution of €7m for the next nine years towards rent and maintenance.

If the bid is successful it is estimated to be worth €180m per year to the Irish economy.

Relocation experts will be contracted to help staff and their families, with €10m set aside for assistance with housing, schools, and identifying jobs for spouses.

There will also be help with practical issues such as banking, moving personal belongings and language lessons.

The Department of Education will provide additional resources for education for the children of staff. If Dublin is selected, the Government has committed to establishing a dedicated transition task force to liaise with the EMA on planning and implementing the relocation.

Office space will be provided in Dublin from 2018 for an advance team from the EMA to work on the agency's move. The relocated EMA building would need to be operational by 1 April 2019, when the UK officially withdraws from the EU.
